ACR Updates “AUC Toolkit” to Educate Advanced Practice Providers

The American College of Radiology (ACR) “AUC Toolkit” now features resources to help radiology professionals educate advanced practice providers (including nurse practitioners and physician assistants) on the coming Medicare appropriate use criteria (AUC) mandate.

Starting Jan. 1, 2020, The Protecting Access to Medicare Act (PAMA) requires referring providers to consult AUC using a qualified clinical decision support mechanism prior to ordering MRI, CT, PET and nuclear medicine exams for Medicare outpatients — including those performed in the emergency department (ED).

Advanced practice providers (APPs) may increasingly refer patients for advanced imaging. The ACR has acted to help radiologists and radiology professionals interact with APPs who refer patients to you regarding the AUC process.

The Toolkit includes background information and what should be included with applicable Medicare orders starting January 1. CMS is expected to release detailed claims processing information this summer. The ACR will then update members with new information to send to your referring providers.

The Clinical Decision Support page on the ACR website contains a wealth of materials to educate yourself, your facility management, billing teams and referring providers on the PAMA requirements.

Please email PAMA-AUC@acr.org with any questions.
