Medicare Contractor Expands ICD-10 Codes for Non-Invasive Vascular Studies to Treat COVID-19 Patients

National Government Services, Inc., a Medicare contractor for many states in New England and the Upper Midwest, has updated its ICD-10 codes for non-invasive vascular studies to diagnose and treat COVID-19 patients.

The updates, issued on May 28, 2020, were made in response to a written request from the American College of Radiology® (ACR®).

Providers should refer to the local coverage article for billing and coding non-invasive vascular studies (A56758) and submit new codes retrospectively to March 1, 2020.

Due to the clinical findings and challenges presented by patients with COVID-19, the following diagnosis codes have been added to ICD-10 Codes that Support Medical Necessity for Extremity Venous Studies Group 4: J96.00, J96.01, J96.02, J96.10, J96.11, J96.12, J96.20, J96.21, J96.22 and R79.1. The need for these diagnoses will be re-evaluated when COVID-19 illness is no longer a concern in the Medicare population.

The ACR applauds National Government Services, Inc., for being receptive to our suggestions to allow providers to effectively treat COVID 19 patients promptly.

Physicians, who bill CPT® codes 93970 and 93971 with associated diagnosis codes, should work with their local Medicare Administrative Contractor to request an update.
