The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has published its final decision memo authorizing Medicare coverage of Supervised Exercise Therapy (SET) for Symptomatic Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). The decision included recommendations of the American College of Radiology (ACR) in collaboration with other medical societies.
The ACR, with leading medical societies, submitted comments to CMS on March 31, 2017, in response to the proposed national coverage decision on SET for PAD. CMS incorporated specific recommendations on supervision, site of service, session sequencing and amputation from the comments into its national coverage decision. Detailed recommendations are outlined in the joint society comment letter.
The ACR applauds CMS for the national decision to cover SET in the Medicare population. PAD affects millions of Americans, and SET has been shown to facilitate pain-free walking and improve maximum walking time, distance and quality of life.
