HHS Expects to Renew COVID-19 Public Health Emergency

On June 29, the Assistant Secretary of Public Affairs for the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) stated that HHS, “expects to renew the Public Health Emergency due to COVID-19 before it expires.”

The public health emergency (PHE) is set to expire on July 25, 2020. The extension would be for 90 days and have various policy and regulatory implications. These include: requirements that insurers cover COVID-19 testing without cost-sharing, telehealth waivers, adjustments made to the Medicare Shared Savings Program surrounding shared losses and Medicare inpatient 20% add-on payment for COVID-19 patients.

Provider groups and the American Hospital Association have urged HHS to extend the PHE. The American College of Radiology® supports this effort and the renewal of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency.
