The American College of Radiology (ACR) detailed analysis of the Calendar Year 2018 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Proposed Rule has found that independent diagnostic testing facilities (IDTFs) face an aggregate 6 percent cut in their fee schedule payment rates, while most medical imaging practitioners will probably see few changes in their rates if the rule is implemented as proposed.
The 6 percent decrease for IDTFs is associated with a practice expense relative value unit (RVU) changes, according to the ACR analysis. It identified potential 1 percent decreases for diagnostic and interventional radiologists, no change for nuclear medicine, and 1 percent increases for radiation oncology and radiation therapy centers.
Regarding mandatory appropriateness use criteria (AUC) implementation, the rule proposes that ordering professionals must begin to consult specified AUC through qualified decision support mechanisms (CDSMs) on Jan. 1, 2019.
The ACR will submit comments on the CY 2019 MPFS proposed rule by the Sept. 11 due date.
