By a vote of 55–43, the Senate confirmed Alex Azar, a former pharmaceutical executive at Eli Lilly and Company, as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on January 24.
Democratic Senators Tom Carper (D-DE), Chris Coons (D-DE), Joe Donnelly (D-IN), Doug Jones (D-AL), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), and Joe Manchin (D-WV) joined all Senate Republicans, except Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), in voting for Azar’s nomination. Prior to his confirmation, Azar served in two different capacities at HHS during the George W. Bush Administration.
Azar assumes the helm of HHS following former Sec. Tom Price’s departure in September 2017 in the wake of a failed attempt to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), commonly referred to as Obamacare, and issues surrounding his questionable use of charter jets.
The American College of Radiology looks forward to working with Sec. Azar.
