Washington Post Letter to Editor Supports Mammography

ACR Breast Imaging Commission Chair Debra Monticciolo, MD, FACR, noted in a letter to the editor to the Washington Post about an “unfortunate political component” of the recently released U.S. Preventive Services Task Force final recommendations for screening mammography.

Monticciolo’s Jan. 15 letter stresses that, if enacted, the recommendations would mean mandatory insurance coverage for screening mammography would end for millions of women leading to thousands of breast cancer deaths each year.
Congress placed a two-year hold on guideline implementation and possible changes to the insurance mandate.

“Congress is justified in delaying implementation of the task force’s recommendations so that breast cancer experts can review them and the process that created them,” Monticciolo wrote.
