Delegate Patrick Hope (D-District 47) has introduced legislation in the Virginia House of Delegates that would effectively bar Anthem from implementing its new outpatient imaging policies in that state. The legislation would also bar Anthem and other insurers from implementing similar policies in the commonwealth.
The nation’s largest Blue Cross Blue Shield plan, with only limited (case-by-case) exceptions, denies payment to providers in several states for advanced imaging exams performed in the hospital outpatient setting. Anthem plans to start this policy in Virginia March 1.
Ten medical groups recently joined the American College of Radiology (ACR) in signing a letter urging Anthem to rescind these policies. The American Medical Association has also urged Anthem against this current course of action.
Visit the ACR Anthem Outpatient Imaging Policy Resources page for information on how you can help counter these arbitrary and unwise Anthem policies.
