The American College of Radiology (ACR) and an alliance of radiology specialty societies requested a new CPT code for image-guided lung biopsy at the February 2019 American Medical Association (AMA) Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) Editorial Panel meeting in Tucson, AZ.
The code change application was submitted in response to the AMA’s Relativity Assessment Workgroup (RAW) for the purpose of identifying what it considers as potentially “misvalued” services to include code pairs identified as being performed together 75 percent or more of the time and, therefore, referred to the CPT Editorial Panel for bundling.
This was the first of three meetings to update codes for the 2021 CPT code cycle. If approved, the new code will be available January 1, 2021.
Presenting CPT advisors, led by Mark Alson, MD, FACR (ACR), included Timothy Crummy, MD, FACR (Radiological Society of North America); Dana Smetherman, MD, MPH, MBA (American Roentgen Ray Society); Eric Rubin, MD (American Roentgen Ray Society); and Andrew Degnan, MD (ACR).
