Dr. Timothy Swan with the 2020 AMA CPT Burgess Gordon Memorial Award
The American College of Radiology® (ACR®) proposed deleting an ultrasound CPT® code and a respected advisor to the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) was honored at the February 2020 American Medical Association (AMA) CPT® Editorial Panel Meeting in San Francisco.
The ACR, led by Mark Alson, MD, and an alliance of radiology specialty societies presented a code proposal to delete CPT code 76970, Ultrasound study follow-up (specify). Code 76970 was referred by the Relativity Assessment Workgroup to CPT for deletion, as it was no longer being used by radiologists and was being misused by other specialties.
This was the first of three meetings to update codes for the 2022 CPT code cycle. Codes approved in 2020 go into effect January 1, 2022.
Separately, the ACR extended congratulations to Timothy Swan, MD, FACR, FSIR, RCCIR, after he was presented this year’s AMA CPT Burgess Gordon Memorial Award at the meeting. The award is given annually to the CPT advisor who has made outstanding contributions to the CPT process.
Swan serves on the CPT Assistant Editorial Board, the AMA/ACR Clinical Examples in Radiology quarterly newsletter and the ACR’s Economics Committee on Coding and Nomenclature. He contributes in the development and review of the SIR/ACR Interventional Radiology Coding Update and the ACR Radiology Coding Source™, the College’s bimonthly coding and reimbursement electronic newsletter.
