Senate HELP Committee Advances Nomination of Stephen Hahn to Lead FDA

On Tuesday, December 3, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee voted 18–5 to advance the nomination of radiation oncologist, Stephen Hahn, MD, to serve as the next Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.

Despite the bipartisan vote, several members of the committee continued to express concern regarding Hahn’s potential response to controversial issues, such as prescription drug importation, e-cigarette regulation and a potential ban on flavored vaping products. Commentary related to these issues is likely to continue as Hahn’s nomination awaits consideration by the full Senate.

While Senate leadership has yet to announce a concrete timeline for a final confirmation vote, HELP Committee chairman Lamar Alexander remained hopeful that the vote could occur before the end of the year.
