On July 30, 2019, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced 'Data at the Point of Care' (DPC), a new pilot program that will give clinicians access to more robust patient histories through application programming interface (API)-enabled access to claims data.
The DPC pilot will leverage inpatient, outpatient and pharmacy claims data on diagnoses, procedures, preventive services and medications. Participants in the pilot program can request a Medicare beneficiary’s information through an API using the bulk data HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources specification. DPC will not require individual beneficiary authorizations but will instead allow patients to opt out on an individual basis.
The pilot is part of the broader federal “MyHealthEData” initiative to proliferate health information sharing.
