A randomized study involving 1,000 Medicare-participating radiologists found most radiology groups and individual radiologists are required to participate in Medicare’s Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), when all their taxpayer identifications numbers (TINs) are considered.
Radiologist Andrew B. Rosenkrantz, MD, MPA and colleagues found that 97 percent of radiology groups and 83 percent of individual radiologists were required to participate. About 45 percent of radiologists were exempt when only one TIN was considered. The researchers strongly encouraged radiology groups to review their physicians’ MIPS participation requirements and special statutes to ensure optimal performance scores and payment bonuses.
The study, Merit-Based Incentive Payment Participation: Radiologists Can Run but Cannot Hide, was sponsored by the Neiman Health Policy Institute and published in the April 2018 Issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology.
