CMS Expands Scope of Practice for Physician Assistants, APRNs

Per President Donald Trump’s request, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has released new waivers of federal requirements to allow medical practitioners, such as physician assistants and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), to order tests that may have previously required a physician’s order. Additionally, CMS will remove physician supervision requirements for certified registered nurse anesthetists.

The temporary waivers were implemented March 30 and will remain effective for the “duration of the (COVID-19) emergency declaration.”
