The American College of Radiology (ACR) has learned the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) proposed rule on Alternative Payment Models (APMs) and the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) has arrived at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for review and approval. This movement to OMB is always a sign that a federal regulation is due to be released to the public soon.
During the fall of 2015, CMS announced a request for information (RFI) on the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA) mandates for APMs and MIPS. It asked all stakeholders to comment on how these new payment systems should be set up and implemented. ACR responded with 45-page comment letter covering the College’s thoughts, concerns and visions for these new programs.
CMS has taken all stakeholder feedback from the RFI and now has developed proposed regulations covering how it plans to set up and implement APMs and MIPS.
The ACR is monitoring the OMB website and will notify the membership once this proposed rule is released. Generally these proposed rules include a 60-day comment period, which is then followed by the release of a final rule.
