National Mammography Database

The National Mammography Database (NMD) leverages data that radiology practices are already collecting by providing comparative information for national and regional benchmarking. Participants receive semiannual feedback reports that include important benchmark data such as cancer detection rates, positive predictive value rates and recall rates. Preliminary data are also available for exams with fewer than 365 days of follow-up to facilitate timely corrections and modifications.

NMD is certified as a Practice Quality Improvement (PQI) projects toward American Board of Radiology Part IV Maintenance of Certification (MOC) credit.

How to Participate

  1. Register each facility that will participate in the registry.
  2. Complete and return a signed participation agreement to NRDR.
  3. Submit payment, then you can get ready to start submitting your data.

How to Submit Data


All NMD data submission is done via a batch file upload process. You can create data files two ways:

  1. Create a file using NMD-certified software from your software provider. Ask your mammography reporting software vendor for an NMD-certified version of your software. If you have a proprietary software tool, contact the NRDR help desk to get certified.
  2. Create your own NMD file using our Excel templates.

Once you have selected your approach, designate a staff person to periodically upload data to the registry using one-click upload functionality.

NMD Star Status Program

Beginning November 2018 participants in NMD can gain recognition and a financial incentive for achieving high-quality data submission. The NMD Star Status Program rewards NMD participants based on three tiers of completeness of their screening exam data. Facilities that achieve gold, silver, or bronze status will receive an award that is applied to its NRDR annual participation fee. Star Status is evaluated annually and reported on the Q3 NMD feedback report.
