Ultramarathons Present Unique Challenge for ACR Member
Radiology residents have a variety of ways to unwind and relax from the pressures of their work. One ACR member, Neety Panu, MD, a third-year resident at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, Saskatchawan, likes to take a 4-hour "fun run." In fact, according to a profile in the February 22 issue of the Medical Post, Panu enjoys the challenges of "ultramarathons."
"I like pushing myself through things," she said in the article. "Everything I've ever done is to the total extreme. I wouldn't do it if I didn't enjoy it."
For example, last year Panu ran the Canadian Death Race, a 125-kilometer race thought to be one of the toughest in the country, and finished in second place with a time of 18 and a half hours.
However, she maintained that the rigors of her passion for running have helped her deal with the demands of her radiology residency. "I don't see being on call for two days in a row as being that hard," she said in the article.
In the article, Panu also challenges other doctors to live a healthier lifestyle.
"Why aren't physicians among the most fit people around?" she asked. "As a medical student, the free food is always coffee, donuts, and pizza. How much harder would it be to have yogurt and fruit around?"
