Radiologist Goes Online for High-Risk Investment Opportunities

Computers have become a necessary tool for today's radiologists. However, one ACR member uses his computer for more than just reviewing and exchanging diagnostic images and evaluations – he's looking for people who want to borrow his money.

Keith H. Wittenberg, MD, of St. Paul, Minn., is one of the many Americans who have become loan sources on the Web site Prosper.com. The site, launched earlier this year, is the nation's first people-to-people lending source, according to a July 31 article in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune. Individuals wanting for loans register on the site with a description of the loan purpose and the interest rate they're willing to accept. Lenders such as Wittenberg then review the loan opportunities and choose the ones that offer "a high enough interest rate to bear the inherent risk of sending money to a stranger," the article explained.

In only four months, Wittenberg has loaned about $24,000 to about 120 individuals for various purposes.

"It's a good source of portfolio diversification," Wittenberg said in the article. "My [Prosper] portfolio's earning 20%, but it has high-risk loans."
