ACR Members Tout New Radiation Therapy System
The University of Maryland is the state's first cancer center to treat patients with a new therapy system known as Triology. The powerful image-guided system delivers high-dose radiation directly to tumors at even faster speeds than before, further minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues.
"Triology is the newest and latest advance in radiation treatment technology," ACR member William F. Regine, MD, chairman of the department of radiation oncology at the UM School of Medicine and chief of radiation oncology at the UM Medical Center, said in a recent press release. "This state-of-the-art system combines the individual strengths of previous-generation technology…in one machine. It gives us maximum flexibility in developing the most effective treatment plans for our patients."
"For some patients, this type of targeted, high-dose radiation therapy is a very effective, noninvasive alternative to surgery," ACR member Mohan Suntharalingam, MD, vice chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology and associate director of the cancer center, added in the release. "We can now treat tumors that are close to vital organs without destroying nearby healthy tissue."
