ACR Member Offers Neutral View of Keepsake Ultrasounds in TV Report
Despite safety concerns raised by medical specialists and organizations such as the American College of Radiology, fetal keepsake ultrasounds remain a popular interest for parents-to-be, as evidenced in a recent news segment on WNWO-TV in Toledo, Ohio.
The segment included comments by ACR member Patrick A. Gustine, M.D., who didn't criticize the procedures, but didn't sanction them either.
"Ultrasound doesn't use X-ray, but there's still energy transmitted," Gustine said in the segment. "We haven't found it unsafe, but haven't proven it safe," adding that the ultrasounds can alert the parents and doctors to any potential problems with the baby.
