ACR Gold Medalist Riemenschneider Passes Away


ACR Fellow Paul A. Riemenschneider, M.D., a 1982 ACR Gold Medalist, passed away Jan. 29. Riemenschneider, a resident of Santa Barbara, Calif., also served the College as president and as a member of the Board of Chancellors.

Born in Cleveland in 1920, Riemenschneider earned his undergraduate degree from Baldwin-Wallace College and his medical degree from Harvard University before completing his radiological residency at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. He also served in the U.S. Navy as a medical officer.

After developing and chairing the department of radiology at Memorial Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y., Riemenschneider served as professor and chairman of the radiology department at Upstate Medical Center. In 1964, Riemenschneider headed west, serving as chief of diagnostic radiology at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital until his retirement in 1988.

In addition to his ACR honors, Riemenschneider’s contributions to radiology were also acknowledged with gold medals from the American Roentgen Ray Society and the Radiological Society of North America. Riemenschneider also was active in his community, serving on the boards and committees of several organizations in the Santa Barbara area.
