ACR Fellow Pisano Picked to Head New Breast Imaging Center

ACR Fellow Etta D. Pisano, M.D., has been tapped to head the new Center for Research Excellence in Breast Care Imaging at the University of North Carolina. The new center, a joint effort with GE Healthcare, will be part of the university’s Biomedical Research Imaging Center.

According to a UNC press release, the new center “will perform important breast imaging research projects including an evaluation of the role of contrast-enhanced mammography in breast cancer diagnosis, the development of image processing in improved digital mammography, and mechanisms to reduce radiation dose to patients who undergo mammography.”

“I am very excited about this opportunity … to create and test new tools for finding breast cancer earlier,” said Pisano, the Kenan professor of radiology and biomedical engineering and the former chief of breast imaging at UNC. Pisano also served as the lead investigator of the American College of Radiology Imaging Network’s Digital Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial which assessed the diagnostic accuracy of film and digital mammography in screening women for breast cancer.
