ACR Fellow Mukkamala Heads Michigan State Medical Society
AppaRao Mukkamala, M.D., was installed as president of the 15,000-member Michigan State Medical Society on April 28.
Mukkamala declared his intention to help implement the medical society’s vision for health care in Michigan as outlined in its report, “The Future of Medicine: Leading the Way to a Better Health Care System,” by focusing on universal coverage for Michigan residents, wellness and prevention, quality, and value. He also plans to address a looming physician shortage in Michigan by working to increase medical school enrollment and winning appropriate state funding for residency programs.
Mukkamala earned his medical degree at Guntur Medical College, Andhra University in India, completing his internship at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, and his residencies in surgery and radiology at Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital in Detroit and Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Mich., respectively. He is currently chair of the department of radiology at Hurley Medical Center, where he also serves on the board of directors.
