Member Makes Boxing History, Possibly Saves Life
ACR member Ronald Sauer, M.D., boxing's first ringside radiologist, used a portable CT scanner to diagnose a post-fight brain bleed during the Oscar De La Hoya - Floyd Mayweather boxing weekend May 5.
Eight boxers were scanned during the weekend's events. One of them, Lorenzo Bethea, presented without visible contusions or other symptoms, but when Sauer read his CT, was found to have a subdural hematoma and midline shift resulting from his fight. With CT equipment, technician, and radiologist available just steps from the ring, the patient arrived at the emergency room with imaging already completed and a diagnosis made, ready to begin treatment.
