ACR Endorses AAPM and ASTRO Conference to Promote Safety in Radiation Therapy

In response to recent publicity on errors in radiation therapy and the increasing complexity of the treatment process, the American College of Radiology (ACR) has endorsed Safety in Radiation Therapy A Call to Action a conference hosted by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) and the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). The event will take place June 24-25, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency Miami.

This conference is aimed to inform all members of the treatment team, as well as manufacturers and regulators. The main topics include: examining the current treatment process to identify and implement safety improvements; identifying methods to provide operators with greater knowledge and control over the radiation delivery process; reviewing radiation therapy team member responsibilities to improve communication, teamwork and safety. This will include perspectives from team members, regulators, manufacturers and patient safety experts.

The meeting registration is capped at 325 registrants. Early registrations will be accepted through May 12. Full details and registration materials are now available online at http://www.aapm.org/meetings/2010SRT.
