Two ACR Members Appointed to Nuclear Regulatory Commissions ACMUI

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has announced the appointment of two ACR members to serve on its Advisory Committee on the Medical Uses of Isotopes (ACMUI).  Christopher J Palestro, MD, member of ACR’s Guidelines and Standards Committee and Musculoskeletal Panel, was appointed to replace retiring member Douglas F Eggli, MD, as the Committee’s Nuclear Medicine Physician. Milton (Mickey) Guiberteau, MD, FACR, former President of the College and former Chair of ACR’s Nuclear Medicine Commission, was selected to fill a newly-created diagnostic radiologist position on ACMUI.

The ACMUI advises NRC on policy and technical issues that arise in the regulation of the medical uses of radioactive material in diagnosis and therapy. The ACMUI membership includes health care professionals from various disciplines who comment on changes to NRC regulations and guidance; evaluate certain non-routine uses of radioactive material; provide technical assistance in licensing, inspection, and enforcement cases; and bring key issues to the attention of the Commission for appropriate action.

Palestro is a professor of radiology at the Hofstra University School of Medicine in partnership with North Shore-LIJ Health System. He also serves as Chief of the Division of Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging of the North Shore — Long Island Jewish Health System

Guiberteau serves as Academic Chief of Diagnostic Radiology and Medical Imaging, Chief of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, and Director of Imaging Services/WomenCare at St. Joseph Medical Center in Houston, TX. He also serves as Radiation Safety Officer at St Joseph Medical Center. Guiberteau holds an academic appointment as a Professor of Clinical Radiology at the University of Texas Medical School, Texas Medical Center — Houston.

Guiberteau’s appointment follows his volunteer service to the ACMUI, since May 2008, as a diagnostic radiologist consultant advisor. The ACR was a strong advocate for NRC’s creation of a permanent voting diagnostic radiology position on the ACMUI.
