J.T. Rutherford Government Relations Fellowship
The J.T. Rutherford Fellowship was founded in 1993 to provide radiology residents direct personal exposure to the ACR's government relations activities. This fellowship allows the residents to gain an understanding of the state and federal legislative and regulatory processes and the ACR's role in such; it also informs residents about the governmental factors that play important roles in shaping the future of radiology. This 1-week program includes historical background on the ACR's congressional activities, exposure to the ACR's Government Relations division and its relationship to the other activities conducted by the ACR departments.
Aside from the congressional apprenticing, the fellow spends the week getting acquainted with a senior staff person from each department to learn their department's intricate role in the ACR's goal to work for the best interest of the radiology profession. The fellow has an opportunity to take part in the day-to-day activities the Government Relations department performs, attend meetings with members of Congress and staff and representatives of federal regulatory agencies, as well as any in-house ACR meetings. Fellows may be assigned individual reading and writing tasks or may be asked to assume work duties that contribute to the office's work product.
The fellowship pays a stipend and covers the cost of accommodations in the Washington, DC, area. The time of the 1-week fellowship is arranged with the intern to accommodate his training schedule.
There will be 6 J.T. Rutherford Fellowships available for 2006–2007. For more information, call Melody Ballesteros at (800) 227-5463, ext 4547.
