"On the Scene" in the Nation's Capital

ACR Government Relations Office

Just as with real estate, success in government relations is all about "location." With that in mind, the ACR looks to be very successful in the coming months and years with the opening of its new government relations office in Washington, DC, on May 24. Located just across the street from the White House, the new office underscores the College's commitment to ensuring the views and concerns of the ACR and its membership are heard by the nation's lawmakers.

"The new government relations office is an important step for the College," said ACR Executive Director Harvey L. Neiman, MD. "With so many of radiology's most pressing issues, such as inappropriate utilization of imaging services and tort reform, having a critical government component, locating our entire government relations staff in the nation's capital allows them greater access to those individuals who decide these critical issues."

The ACR had been leasing office space in Washington for more than a year for use as necessary, but the relocation of the entire government relations staff from the College's Reston, Va, headquarters to the capital is a significant step. The new offices allow ACR officials and staff timelier access to members of Congress and provide an impressive location for receptions and fundraisers.

"This move allows us to enhance the day-to-day visibility of the College and the key issues that affect the entire membership," says ACR Assistant Executive Director Cynthia Moran. "Our new location enablesus to develop critical partnerships and interact with both our colleagues and our customers."

The ACR and ACRa's presence in the government affairs arena has become prominent in recent years, through the rapid growth of RADPAC and advocacy efforts on a myriad of issues that have significant impact on radiology. The critical connection between radiology and policymakers continues to grow exponentially, placing an even greater emphasis on an effective and motivated government affairs department.
