About the Fourth Annual Body MRI Update Meeting
The collective objective of the Body MRI Course faculty is to condense and transfer the years of experience and advanced methods developed in each of their respective practices to others who wish to further refine their own MRI practice. The didactic sessions will serve to review and update attendees on the latest methods and applications for disease detection and characterization for use at their own centers.

Learning Objectives
After the course, attendees will be able to:
- To develop an updated understanding of appropriate and cost-effective utilization of MRI for the evaluation of diseases affecting the chest, abdomen, and pelvis, including breast, pregnancy and the acute abdomen, angiography, pediatric application of MRI and diseases specific to male or female pelvis

Faculty
Meet the faculty of the nation’s finest experts in Body MRI, get to know a little about each of our faculty members before the meeting.
Kimberly Applegate, MD, MS, FACR is a professor and vice chair of quality and safety for radiology at Emory University. Dr Applegate is the recipient of several research grants, awards, and scholarships including an American Roentgen Ray Society Scholarship. Dr Applegate was a RSNA Editorial Fellow and created and co-edited the Statistical Concept Series for Radiology in addition to serving on multiple editorial boards--Academic Radiology, AJR Integrative Imaging, Journal of the American College of Radiology, and Radiology, Pediatric Radiology, and Radiology. She is the Past President of the Association for University Radiologists and was the 2006 President of the Radiology Alliance for Health Services Research. She serves or has served on multiple boards of directors including the Association for University Radiologists (AUR), Association for Program Directors in Radiology, Association for Program Coordinators in Radiology, Academy for Radiology Research, American Academy of Pediatrics section on radiology executive committee, Society for Pediatric Radiology, and the AAWR. Dr Applegate has published over 120 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, and presented scientific papers and lectures at medical and scientific assemblies across the United States. In 2007, Dr. Applegate was elected to both the National Council for Radiation Protection and the Steering Committee of the American College of Radiology (ACR), and began work on the Steering Committee for the Image Gently Campaign to reduce radiation exposure in children.
Michele A. Brown, MD is currently an associate professor of Radiology at University of California, San Diego, where she serves as chief of pelvic MR imaging. She completed her radiology residency training at UCSD and body imaging fellowship at Stanford University. Trained in all modalities of abdominopelvic imaging, her research interests predominantly involve MR imaging of the female pelvis. Dr. Brown has authored or co-authored over 30 articles and book chapters, and she is an active speaker on the topic of MR imaging of the female pelvis.

Bobby T. Kalb, MD joined the faculty at Emory University as Assistant Professor in 2008, after completion of a Transitional Science Research Fellowship in the Body MRI Applied Research Program. Dr. Kalb also completed his radiology residency training at Emory University, where he served as chief resident, and prior to this had completed his undergraduate and medical degree at the University of Virginia. He has been recognized for his educational efforts at Emory University, and has also been involved with educational programs through the American College of Radiology. Dr. Kalb’s research interests include quantitative functional imaging of the kidney, and his more recent areas of research include the evaluation of pulmonary vascular disease with MRI.
John R. Leyendecker, MD is Clinical Director of MRI and an Associate Professor of Radiology in the Abdominal Imaging Section at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He completed medical school at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, diagnostic radiology training at Emory University in Atlanta, fellowship training in VIR at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, and fellowship training in body MRI at the Washington University School of Medicine Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology in St. Louis. He is a co-editor of two textbooks- ProblemSolving in Abdominal Imaging and Practical Guide to Abdominal and Pelvic MRI and an active member of the ACR, RSNA, ARRS, SUR, SGR, and ISMRM.
Diego R. Martin, MD, PhD (Program Chair) is a Professor, Director of MRI, Director of the Clinically Applied Research Body MRI Program, Chair of MRI Safety at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta Georgia. His MRI Program is centered on building an interdisciplinary team with the triple mission of clinical service, translational research, and education, through the implementation of innovation from bench to bedside. The clinical practice he directs is amongst the largest and most efficient body MRI practices in the U.S. with use of multi-vendor multicenter unified set protocols, rapid patient exams, free-breathing imaging, and novel clinical applications related to diseases of the liver, kidneys, pancreas, lungs, bowel, and male/female pelvis. His team’s research focuses on cancer, transplantation, metabolic diseases, and functional tissue imaging that will be useful for community practice within short scan times. He has also spearheaded institutional systems for patient safety and quality control and has been playing a role in developing the peer-reviewed published clinical database to guide safe gadolinium-chelate contrast utilization and policies as well as on ionizing radiation risk assessment. His team has had a significant role in the evolution of new MRI machine and software design and Dr. Martin is intent on transferring the developments from his team to other centers through improved engineering of next-generation MRI scanners with increased automation, image quality, and faster patient scans. He is highly committed to working with the ACR on education pathways. In addition to this program, he also is program director for the level 2 ACR Body MRI Education Center Course, an intensive mini-fellowship designed as an adjunct to this ACR course, and is Chair of the newly forming ACR Continuous Professional Improvement Program (CPI) written case-based self-learning course on body MRI. Dr. Martin is highly published, reviews for numerous journals, serves as a reviewer for the NIH-NIBIB, and is one of the Associate Editors for JMRI. He has authored a textbook “Primer on Body MRI” with co-authors Michele Brown and Richard Semelka, designed as a quick reference guide for the resident, fellow, or practicing radiologist.
Mary S. Newell, MD has been at Emory since 2001, and serves as Assistant Director of the. Section of Breast Imaging, Director of Breast MRI, Director of Emory’s Breast Imaging Fellowship Program and Associate Director of the Breast Cancer Center of Winship Cancer Institute. She is active in the ACR, currently acting as councilor. She serves as Education Chair for the Georgia Radiological Society and has been a board examiner for the ABR. Before 2001, she was in private practice in Northwest Indiana.
Scott B. Reeder MD, PhD joined the UW faculty in 2005 as an assistant professor in the department of Radiology, and is Division Chief of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Cardiovascular Imaging. He comes from Stanford University where he completed his radiology residency in diagnostic imaging and a fellowship in cardiovascular and abdominal imaging. Previously, he completed medical school at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, where he also received his Masters and PhD in Biomedical engineering. He is originally from Canada where he received his BScE in Engineering Physics at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. Dr. Reeder's research interests are in the development of quantitative biomarkers of chronic liver disease, as well as novel imaging methods for cardiovascular and abdominal MRI, particularly in the development of rapid and quantitative imaging techniques, including rapid cardiac imaging methods, and novel fat-water separation techniques. More recent areas of interest include metabolic imaging with hyperpolarized 13C labeled compounds and stem cell tracking with super-paramagnetic iron-oxide (SPIO) labeled cells.
Richard C. Semelka, MD is a Professor, Director of MRI Services, and Vice Chairman of Clinical Research and Vice Chairman of Quality and Safety of the Department of Radiology, at the University of North Carolina Hospitals. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of the journals JMRI, MRI and TMRI, among many others. He has contributed to over 200 publications in referred journals and has authored numerous review articles and textbook chapters. He has authored 7 text-books, including Abdominal-Pelvic MRI, second edition, Wiley-Liss, 2006. His main expertise lies in cross sectional abdominal imaging with an emphasis on MRI, with a particular interest of liver, pancreas, kidney and bowel diseases. He regularly conducts various teaching and categorical courses at International Radiology Conferences.
Puneet Sharma, PhD is a Clinical MRI Physicist by Emory Healthcare, Inc in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Shrama is involved with both optimization and quality assurance of all clinical MRI protocols, as well as the development of new techniques to improve efficiency. He has an active role in research activities, focusing primarily on body MRI applications. These include hepatic lipid measurement with MR spectroscopy; quantitative contrast-enhanced liver imaging of liver disease; functional imaging of the kidney; functional imaging of the lung; delayed contrast-enhancement of myocardial infarction; T1 and T2 mapping of contrast kinetics. Annually he attends and presents at the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, and has been published in an array of peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Dr. Sharma obtained his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Georgia Tech, with research focused in cardiac MRI.
Evan S. Siegelman, MD is an Associate professor within the Abdominal Imaging Division of the Department of Radiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He completed medical school at Johns Hopkins and radiology residency and MR fellowship training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. His interests are the clinical principles and practice of Body MR imaging.
