The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research. The NIH invests over $28 billion annually in medical research. More than 80% of the NIH’s funding is awarded through nearly 50,000 competitive grants to more than 212,000 researchers at over 2,800 universities, medical schools, and other research institutions in every state and around the world.
ACR is an ardent advocate for NIH-supported medical research and actively lobbies for additional NIH appropriations. ACR also maintains important relationships with NIH staff and participates in policy development activities affecting federally-supported research.
