Reston, Va. – Harvey L. Neiman, M.D., has been named as the new executive director of the American College of Radiology. Neiman, chairman of the ACR Board of Chancellors, succeeds John Curry. Neiman will take over executive director duties in Reston in January 2003.
"I am honored to have the opportunity to lead radiology's foremost organization," Neiman said. "The ACR has provided me with tremendous opportunities through the years. Now I look forward to guiding the College and its membership through the challenging times ahead."
Currently, Neiman is chairman of the department of radiology at Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Bloomfield and a clinical professor of diagnostic radiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Since joining the Western Pennsylvania Hospital staff, Neiman has developed a highly respected residency program in diagnostic radiology and the department is one of the nation's leaders in filmless imaging. Under his leadership, the hospital launched subspecialty fellowship programs in interventional radiology, abdominal imaging and women's imaging. In addition, Neiman serves on numerous hospital committees, including the executive committee of the medical staff and the executive management council.
During his tenure as ACR board chairman, Neiman has been instrumental in the College's efforts to promote awareness of the nation's critical mammography access situation and increase the federal reimbursement to radiologists who perform mammograms. He has actively worked to address the nation's shortage of radiologists and, as president of the Radiology Advocacy Alliance, has helped advance radiology's legislative goals in the nation's capital.
Neiman earned his bachelor's and medical degrees from Wayne State University in his native Detroit. After an internship at the University of Cincinnati Hospital, he completed his radiology residency and an angiography fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor. Prior to joining the staff of Western Pennsylvania Hospital, he was a professor of radiology and chief of angiography and sectional imaging at Northwestern University in Chicago.
Neiman is the author or co-author of more than 116 articles in refereed journals and is the author of 25 book chapters. A frequent guest lecturer both nationally and internationally, he has been a visiting professor at 25 universities. Highly respected by his peers as a practitioner and educator, Neiman was presented with the President's Award from the American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine in April.
Neiman and his wife, Ellie, are the parents of two daughters, Jennifer and Hilary.
The ACR is a national organization serving more than 32,000 radiologists, radiation oncologists and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of radiology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
