Reston, Va. –– The American College of Radiology applauds Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson for today's announcement reaffirming the value of screening mammography for the women of this country. The HHS recommendation calls for screening mammography every one to two years for women ages 40 and over.
"The American College of Radiology has been deeply concerned about the recent controversy over screening mammography, which has confused many women about whether or not to have a mammogram," says E. Stephen Amis Jr., M.D., vice chairman of the ACR. "The benefits of screening mammography have clearly been shown in randomized controlled trials and in general population screening. Secretary Thompson's strong statement has correctly set the record straight that screening mammography does save lives."
