Record Group 7 Detail - Radiology Profession Collections
This record group contains files and artifacts collected by the College, relating to the radiological profession and its subspecialties.
Subgroup 7.1: General Profession Collection
This subgroup mainly contains files collected by Robert Morrison and Dr. Nancy Knight and titled "Original Collection." The collection includes correspondence from several prominent figures, including Mme. Curie, and Drs. Albert Soiland, Eugene Pendergrass, Edward Brecher, E. Dale Trout and W. D. Coolridge. Also included in the correspondence is a file related to the College's acquisition of two chairs originally owned by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen. Other series in the collection include subject files regarding many topics and personalities in radiology (1900 to 1970s), history files and manuscripts related to regional accomplishments in the profession (1920s and ca. 1950s to 1970s), two early articles about x-rays (1986 and n.d.), and a variety of patents (1920s-1930s).
Also included in the collection are charts and blueprints related to dosages and equipment, a notebook from an Army x-ray lecture (1918), a scrapbook from Major Eugene Caldwell and seven other topic-specific scrapbooks, a miscellany of early profession-related clippings (1896 to 1920s), and a small series of memorabilia containing a grid for oral roentgenograms, a signed title page from Radiologic Exploration of the Mucosa of the Gastro-Intestinal Tract, and French stamps of Antoine Beclere.
A few series have been integrated into the collection, because of the connection to the general radiology profession, a series of clip art (including cartoons, logos, sketches, and advertisements) originally collected by Dr. E. R. N. Grigg and a small collection of early (pre-1910) x-ray-related journals. Two other series added to the original collection were awards and medals from the College, the International Congress on Radiology, the American Congress on Radiology, the American Radium Society and other organizations, and artwork (including portraits of Curie and Roentgen) donated to the College.
Subgroup 7.2: Slides/X-rays/Photographs Collection
This subgroup contains the collection of profession-related x-ray and photographic images collected by the College. Included in the collection are nearly 4300 glass slides of x-rays, diagrams and photographs of patients and treatments, and film and glass plate x-rays from the 1920s to approximately 1960s. Also included in the subgroup is a collection of photographs, divided into the following subjects: portraits, ads and publications, cartoons, equipment and material, memorials, logos and memorabilia, x-rays and related images and oversize photographs.
Subgroup 7.3: Manufacturing Catalogs/Advertisements/Equipment Collection
The manufacturing and equipment collection subgroup includes two series manufacturing catalogs and advertisements and radiology-related equipment. The manufacturing catalogs and advertisement series contain brochures, ads, manuals and catalogs from equipment manufactures, arranged alphabetically. A list of the companies in the collection is included in this guide as Attachment B. The radiology-related equipment collection includes a variety of historical x-ray equipment. The collection contains more than 100 x-ray tubes, and screens, portable units, and dental x-ray equipment.
Along with the historical equipment donated to the Smithsonian Institution in 1978, this collection documents the history of radiology equipment. For further information regarding the radiology equipment donated to the Smithsonian, please contact that collection's curator:
