Record Group 3 Detail - American College of Radiology Foundation, Inc.
This record group contains the files of the ACR Foundation. In 1958, the Board of Chancellors founded the ACR Foundation for the purpose of financially supporting scientific and educational advances in radiology. In 1963, the Museum Committee (which came out of the Council for Radiologic Heritage) was transferred to the Foundation as the tax-exempt arm of the College interested in preserving the history of the organization and the profession. Included in this record group are files from several entities focused on preserving historical material; including the American Institute of Radiology, the National Council for Radiological Heritage, the Commission of Affairs of the American Institute of Radiology, and the Center for the American History of Radiology.
Subgroup 3.1: American Institute of Radiology
Due to the increasing range of activities associated with the history of radiology, the ACR Foundation created the American Institute of Radiology, or AIR, a conglomerate to supervise all radiologic "fine arts" projects.
Subdivision 3.1.1: Curator's Files
Material in this subdivision was generated and collected by from Robert Morrison, the curator for the collection from the late 1964 to the late 1970s. The files include correspondence, subject files, manuscripts and photographs related to his activities as curator. Dates range from the late 1960s to the early 1980s, with the bulk from the late 1970s.
Included in the subdivision are files relating to the use restrictions on the Mme. Curie film and the donation of early radiology equipment to the Smithsonian in 1978.
Subdivision 3.1.2: Commission on Affairs of the American Institute of Radiology
In early 1968 the Museum Committee was elevated to the level of commission and became the Commission of the Affairs of the American Institute of Radiology. Included in the subdivision are correspondence, subject files, meeting files, reports and member lists related to the activities of the commission, including donations and collections. The files range in date from the mid-1970s to 1988, with the bulk from the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Subgroup 3.2: National Council for Radiologic Heritage
In 1955 or 1956 a group of radiologists, lead by Drs. Edwin Ernst, Benjamin Orndoff and Walter Wasson, got together to discuss stories about the "good ol' days." This group became known as The Gas Tube Gang. In 1961, the group was expanded and the name was changed to the National Council for Radiologic Heritage (NCRH). In 1964 this group was taken over by the ACR Foundation. The files from this subgroup document its activities from its inception as NCRH in 1961 to the late 1960s. Included in the subgroup are correspondence from several members, donors, sponsors and the curator, Robert Morrison. Also included is a list of the original attendants at the first NCRH meeting (in manuscript) and a few photographs of an early historical exhibit.
Subgroup 3.3: Center for the American History of Radiology
The work of the Center for the American History of Radiology, or CAHR, continued the activities of its predecessors, AIR and NCRH. The CAHR continued to collect documents related to the history of radiology. The files of the CAHR reflect these collection activities. Most of the files in the subgroup came from the archive's curator, Dr. Nancy Knight, and are made up of manuscripts and history files related to regional and sub-specialty histories. Other series include correspondence, subject files, interview, and photographs/x-rays/slides. The files range from the mid-1960s to 1995, with from the 1980s and 1990s.
