CMS Solicits Proposals for ACR-Backed Provision
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced today that it is soliciting proposals for participation in the Medicare Imaging Demonstration (MID).
ACR advocated for this project during the health care reform debate in order to demonstrate that future savings in imaging could be derived through increasing quality and decreasing utilization instead of implementing broad across the board cuts to advanced imaging services. The College is pleased that CMS has chosen this project to be one of the first to be explored under the new CMS Innovation Center provision contained in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act enacted in March.
Specifically, the MID will test whether the use of decision support systems (DSSs) can improve quality of care and reduce unnecessary radiation exposure and utilization by promoting appropriate ordering of advanced imaging services.
ACR is currently reviewing the CMS announcement and its accompanying guidelines to ascertain how the College might participate in the MID.
