NRC Proposed Rule to Expand National Source Tracking System

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) released a proposed rule to expand the National Source Tracking System (NSTS) to incorporate Category 3 and some Category 4 sealed sources.  The deadline for public comment submission is June 25, 2008.

The NSTS was designed to be a web-based system to track the manufacture and distribution of Category 1 and 2 sources in the United States.  NRC considered incorporating Category 3 sources during the initial NSTS rulemaking for Categories 1 and 2, but decided to postpone their final decision and address it via a subsequent rulemaking.

At this writing, the NSTS implementation date for Categories 1 and 2 sources is January 31, 2009.  The implementation date to incorporate Category 3 and some Category 4 sealed sources is July 31, 2009.  Additional information will be provided on the ACR website as the rulemaking process moves forward.
